Safeguard the Children

"Committed to creating a safe environment for all children of our parish community."

Safeguard the Children is our parish program, under the direction of our Safeguard the Children Ministerial Committee, that focuses on keeping our children safe at all times and it is managed by a ministry oversight committee.  The ministry consists of parish staff, parishioners, school staff and clergy all dedicated to promoting and ensuring the protection of all children and youth. By working closely with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles the committee ensures that all adults who have regular contact with children and youth are vetted and approved for their roles and trained in maintaining a safe environment within our parish. In line with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, issued by the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, all parish employees and volunteers having regular, ongoing interaction with minors are required to attend a VIRTUS seminar (“Protecting God’s Children”) and have a background check. The USCCB Charter also directs all dioceses and parishes to implement safe environment programs to be presented to all children and youth enrolled in a parish religious education program or school. Further information about these efforts is made available to families at the beginning of each year.

On Sunday, April 3, 2016, St. Bede displayed its support for National Child Abuse Prevention Month.   Pinwheels for PreventionTM is a national and local public awareness campaign that puts a new "spin" on the prevention of child abuse.  April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to recognize that we all play an important role in protecting our children.  The pinwheel represents hope, health, and happiness. This uplifting symbol of childhood represents our continuing efforts to ensure the healthy development of all children, making sure child abuse and neglect never occur in our communities.  For many years, the Safeguard the Children Committee here at St. Bede has actively worked within the parish -- for both public and Catholic school students -- to help prevent child sexual abuse and to promote a safe environment for our children and young people.
