In John 3:16 Jesus says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whomsoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life." This Bible verse is probably the most well-known Bible verse of all. As the verse and song say, God sent his Son to draw us into his Love, and thus, "God is love. In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him." (1 John 4:8-9) Through Jesus, we are drawn into the very life and love of God in the Sacraments. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: 'Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.'" (Article 2, section 1, 1213).
